Welcome!

It may be impossible to smooth over all the pitfalls facing youth today – from substance abuse to gambling to our society’s preoccupation with violence, but that has not deterred the Community Connections for Youth from trying. The coalition, formed in 2001, contains a cross-section of educators, clergy, counselors and parents….all focusing on problems facing young people – from poor self-esteem to learning how to resolve disagreements peacefully.

The Minneapolis-based Search Institute identified 40 characteristics which enable youth to succeed (english), (español). They include: Creativity, involvement in community, strong family bonds, a drive to achieve, tolerance of others and a willingness to take personal responsibility for his or her actions. Past nationwide surveys indicated that school leaders and community volunteers exhibit 30 to 40 of these assets. Those exhibiting questionable behaviors – including legal troubles, drug use, and dropping out of school – typically exhibit no more than 10 of these coveted “building blocks.” On average, American youth exhibit just 16 to 18 of these assets. A 2004 survey found 43 percent of Woodstock students questioned fell in this range. A whopping 21 percent have 10 or less of the assets.

Clearly there is work to do, but it will take a broad and sustained effort from people like you.

CCY’s goals are to boost public awareness, increase youth involvement in positive activities, periodically survey teens to stay abreast of their concerns and needs and raise money to help further these ends. Activities include sponsoring youth to leadership conferences, overseeing our own youth advisory board (YAB), and underwriting the cost of guest speakers.

CCY meets the second Monday morning of each month at the Judd Street Firehouse from 8:45 am to 10:00 am.
